Posts: 51 Posted March 03, 2009 04:46 PM Are 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades all on the same team or are the teams split into 3rd/4th and 5th/6th?

Posts: 1221 Posted February 25, 2009 01:40 AM Nebraska USA is hosting an elementary national dual championship in Fremont, Nebraska at Midland Lutheran College on April 9th, 10th, and 11th, 2009.

If you have contacts in another state please let them know. I'm in the process of going on forums around the midwest letting them know. We have several states interested in coming and Nebraska hopes to field 3 teams of its own.

Posts: 31 Posted February 25, 2009 08:09 AM Do you hate huskerland that much that you are going to go up against the state tournament?

Posts: 236 Posted February 25, 2009 08:23 AM Is there alot of interest in this or what? I don't see lots of kids not going to Huskerland. It's an annual event with good history.

Posts: 7 Posted February 25, 2009 08:42 AM I personally like the idea of a giving Huskerland a little challenge. I'm still not sure why they decided to move it to Hastings this year, Kearney seemed to be the perfect location, dead smack in the middle of the state.

Posts: 31 Posted February 25, 2009 08:42 AM The point that I want to make is that we have kids going to Grand Island with the intent on making the state dual team now only to learn that they would have to choose between events.
I realize that the changing of insurance was (is) a sore subject but to punish the kids is wrong.

Posts: 17 Posted February 25, 2009 10:39 AM You do not have to choose this event is for 3-6 grade and is not used to decide the dual teams that go to danville. That is the USA state tournament.

Unless things have changed KW they would have to choose if they make the team at USA State. Now I am not seeing anything on the their site that talks to this but I did see it in an earlier post on this forum by 525
I am not trying to get in to a pissing match about USA and Huskerland because I do believe that the more opportunities our kids have the better. It just seems to me that thing could have been worked out better between the two groups.

Posts: 208 Posted February 25, 2009 11:27 AM This should be the only year that they are on the same date. It is a conflict b/c of the prime date the events are held on. When traveling out of state it is nice to do this over a break from school. That way kids don't miss as much and your travel isn't hurried b/c of lack of vacation days. I know when we went to Danville last year it was a pain to get back at 3 or 4 in the morning and then teach school at 8:00am. Huskerland will be moving off of Easter starting next year. Conflict for one year. Kids will have to choose, but they do it all the time. How many club tournaments are going on this weekend? I know we are within 50 miles of atleast 4.

OC, I understand the date issue I just think that it sucks. And as far as kids making chooses for weekend club tournaments, that doesn't compare to making a select team and a state tournament.

Posts: 1221 Posted February 25, 2009 05:54 PM Ok, I'm back after working in the field all day.
Devilyouth, I understand your frustration, but let me explain why I chose that date. I first researched all the surrounding states that would be interested in coming to this event and found that their state tournaments where being held all the different weekends in March. I take a group of kids the last weekend in march to Danville, so March was out. Second, I checked to see when USA Nationals in Cedar Falls IA was and found it to be the first weekend in April. The National office didn't want NE USA to have this tournament the same time as their National tournament and it wouldn't be good for us either. Third Huskerland tournament was the second weekend same as Easter weekend. I was told this was the last year they would be on Easter weekend. I also checked into the third weekend in April and that's when AAU middle school duals is being held in Iowa. The AAU event includes 5th and 6th graders and I felt that having two national events the same weekend might hurt us too. Parents that have 2 wrestlers different ages would have to choose. I then decided to choose the second weekend in April, because quite frankly it was the lessor of the evils. We are running a National tournament, so other states that are coming don't care that Huskerland is on that date. The Easter weekend, I have found, is when most schools are out for spring break. This allows the tournament to be done on friday and saturday so everyone is home late saturday night, rest on Sunday and back to work or school on Monday. I agree with OC Knights, Danville is a fun but hard trip. The weekend I've chose will be good for the teams coming from out of state. We would like to field 3 teams which would be around 50 kids. If we only get 2 teams it will only be around 35 kids. Huskerland gets around 1000 kids, so I didn't think it would hurt their tournament missing a small fraction. Yes kids will have to chose. Wrestle national competition or wrestle huskerland competition. After this year it won't be an issue again.
Good luck and hope to see you in Grand Island.

Posts: 81 Posted March 03, 2009 10:52 AM I know alot of people love Huskerland but come on, its not a true state championship tournament..A true state tournament would be having weight classes & qualifing tournaments just like high school..If my kids can get 3-5 matches against tough competition then I'd rather go for the tougher competition. Huskerland is just another 8-man bracket tournament..Some tough kids and some not..
