Thanks to everyone that puts this on. We had a great time. The competition was very tough and the meet ran very smoothly.
We got out in time to do a little shopping and have an early dinner before the 6 hour drive home. Still made it home before 10pm. Hats off to Coach Bauer and the UNK wrestlers and volunteers. The results are already up. Awesome!! We'll keep coming back. |

Another great tourney by Coach Bauer and his staff. Even though the numbers were down a little the competition was still great. i.e. 18 & under 119 - 5 state champs in the bracket!

I noticed the seeding was a little odd in a couple of the 18 and under classes.
Winning state is only 1/50th of the equation. |

I have experienced it both ways and something has to be done if you have 12 and under on either day that session is to long this year my son 10 and under wrestled at 11:00 then at 3:00 then at 4:30 that is to long in between sessions I dont mind when every mat is being used but at the end of the day when he had 30 matches on his mat and there were 7 or 8 mats not being used I was getting very upset we will not be coming back and we have been coming since it started my older son has won it 3 times so you are losing some good competition

On a positive note......my son wrestled in the 15 and under on Saturday and we were done with awards for his bracket by 12:45. It was a great day!

I have been to a lot of large tournaments all around the country as a spectator, coach and competitor. It is the same everywhere. The larger the tournament the longer it takes. Unfortunatly that is the way wrestling is. Love it or leave it.

Well folks I can't believe that you are bashing this tournament. If you want to see how poorly a national tournament is run go to a Rocky Mountain Nationals event...any of them, they all stink, and my sons have wrestled in them for the past 6 yrs. or so including Monster Match this year.
You have a gem with this tournament and the way that it is run. Trust me when I say this: Support UNK and this tournament!!! The money goes to a great college and benefits wrestlers not just one guy, (Ed Gutierrez of RMN). I have been to over 25 National tournaments and can tell you that as far as gettin in, and gettin out, this was one of the better ones I have been to. I know there was a slight delay on a couple of mats but not such a one that I would forego this tournament. Congrats to Marc Bauer on his teams performance and great job with the MIDWEST CLASSIC !!! Winning state is only 1/50th of the equation. |

husker40,
next year try double bracketing your son. That's what I did and my son got 8 matches in. It seemed like he was on the mat all day. |

Thats a good idea thanks. I love that the money goes to the college and the wrestling program instead of somebodys pocket that is a big reason why we come. when there were open mats I just wish they would have used them

Husker 40,
PW&WP is right on the money. Unlike RMN's, there is no parking fee, or $40 coaches band, security that makes you feel as though you're in detention, high hotel costs, Denver rush hour traffic and outrageous concession prices, but we have attended anyways for the competition. My boy didn't attend the Classic this year because of a committment in Denver, but we will not make that mistake again if the two tournaments are on the same day. Waiting to finish in Denver this year, my dad, son and I missed out on Easter supper with our family back home on Sunday evening, whilst there was no wrestling going on, on about half of the 13 mats that were on the floor in the morning as they set a 2 p.m. finals time, which they announced 15 minutes before my boy was supposed to wrestle at 10 in the morning. I know that there is UNK staff that are on huskermat and will note the indescretions and make the appropriate changes to continue to make the classic a better tourney, because they already have as good of competition as RMN's. I too would much rather give my money to a good thing, which is what the Classic is, than to see another diamond cluster ring on Ed's other hand! I have found out that most of these large national tournaments are consistantly overpriced and/or poorly ran and/or poorly officiated, with the exception of USA's Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls. Hope you decide to come back again to the Classic again Husker 40. Congrats to the Loper program and all involved! |

Big D -
Thank you for your post. Your feelings are exactly the reasons we went back to Kearney rather that stay "home" and wrestle RMN. Yes the brackets were bigger at RMN, but for us, it just made more sense to head to Kearney. Still had 25 kids or so in the bracket and the boy got 5 matches. I paid less for the entire family to get into the Midwest Classic (including the entry fee) than I would have just for a coaches band at RMN. Even with fuel over $3 a gallon, we still came out ahead driving 300 miles. In and out in 1 day, home by 10pm, got to celebrate Easter with my family, gave my money to a great organization, and we were welcomed by everyone that knew we were from out of town. That includes the USA Steak Buffet and the receptionist at the hotel. |

Falcon Dad,
I'm glad that you attended the Classic and enjoyed it. I ran a booth at RMN's and heard nothing but praise about the Classic from CO area wrestlers that actually attended both tournaments. I know that the date to secure the arena was the reason the tournament was scheduled the same weekend as RMN's. If the two tournaments are run on different weekends next year, like maybe the weekend before RMN's, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to start seeing comparable numbers between the two tournaments. The trophies and medals are equivalent, with the exception of triple crown and golden gear, but the awards presentation is much better at the Classic. My boy won his weight class, waited for a challenge for true 2nd to receive his trophy and then went back for pictures, and everyone was gone and someone affiliated with the arena, not RMN's, gave him his trophy and they took his picture by himself. Managed to get home at 1 am. Wish I would have gone to Classic too! Luckily we have DVR, got all the NCAA coverage taped! |
