I was at the tournament and I was very impressed with the number of kids that coach Garfield brought from Central City. Getting this type of an off season commitment is huge in building a program. I thought the Nebraska boys held up pretty well and was impressed with them. One thing that did not impress me was the actions of Ronald Coleman's coach. I only saw his finals match up close but it was the only case that I saw of a coach cussing at an official. After the wrestlers went out of bounds he thought that Coleman should have been given an escape (it wasnt even close to one). So the coach actually used profanity towards the official and put on a totally disgraceful display. If it would have been a regular met he would have been kicked out. I thought it took away from the great performance that Coleman himself had over the weekend.

Congrats to all of the wrestlers and coaches. Sounds like Nebraska had a good showing.
I heard that Matthew Maresh was named the outstanding Senior wrestler as well. Congrats Matt! |

Congrats to these guys because they showed up and wrestled. But how can it be called a national tournament when the OW was not even a state champ in his own state. Pretty weak national tournament.

Honestly, the "national" label is just that, a label. Yes, there are kids from all over the country but is it the best of the best? NO, no way. Senior Nationals are about as close as your ever gonna get to the dream of having the best wrestle the best.
Some brackets were just tough as nails while others were weak. I think you get that at any tournament you go to. I will tell you that from what I saw, Matt didn't have it easy in the championship match & he wrestled his tail off! Just for an example of bracket variations 155lb Junior bracket had: 24 competitors (this is not a typical # for senior brackets) 5 state champions (1 ranked in the USA) 6 state runner-ups (1 ranked in the USA) 4 state medalist (3rd-6th) 7 state qualifiers (other than what was just listed above) AZ, IN, KS, IA, MO, NY, SD, MI, IL, ND, CO & NE were all represented. Now, if you look at 12th grade 115lbs, there was 3 competitors so "All-American" doesn't mean much. One last thing that I wanted to add (my opinion only), if you're a Senior attending Brute & hoping to get the attention of college coaches, your at the wrong tournament unless someone can figure out how to get seniors to attend. Now if your a Junior, you may have better luck. Several college coaches were there including our own Coach Bauer but 10 or less in some of the senior brackets is less than desirable I would guess. |
