189 Pursel, EFF dec Craig, BUR 11-3
215 Browne, PLA pinned Coatney, AUB
275 Bergland, PLA pinned Hoffman, FAIR

Some notes
Bashus got DQed on a controversial slam over the Bryan kid in the semis and came back to get 3rd.

Negley and Laughlin was 2-1 late in the third when Negley countered a Laughlin shot for a 5 point move. Negley looked tough at 112.

Degenhardt and Luongo will be very tough to beat when they're back down at their normal weights. Luongo looks like a 189.

Crouch hits a duck under off the whistle with 5 seconds left to win. After that some guy (I assume from Thayer Central) got kicked out of the tourney after yelling down at the ref. Luongo had reached behind him and was holding Crouch's head but all the coaches I talked to said it was a definite TD. Great match though!

Pursel made Craig look much worse than he is. Craig will surprise people this year. Very good on his feet. Pursel is pretty good.

Bergland is an animal. Pinned all his kids in the first period. That Fairbury kid made the mistake of running into one of Bergland's double legs. It looked like one of Goldberg's spears.

Bashus got DQed on a controversial slam

How do you define a "controversial slam"?

What is the difference between being awarded a point versus being disqualified?

Didn't actually see it. I just saw the follow up. It was called a slam by the ref by judging by the reaction it appeared to be a very questionable call.

You are awarded a point for an illegal slam, if the wrestler who is slammed can't resume wrestling when his injury time is up, the wrestler who did the slamming is DQed.

So, if after an "illegal" slam you can't/don't continue, you win. However, if you continue and tough it out and still wrestle wounded/limited and lose... then you should have quit and taken the win.

Is that the rule, Guest?

Top 5 going into finals round were Burke, Auburn, Plattsmouth, Thayer Central and Effingham. Burke was way out in front and wrestled without Zach Randall who didn't pass skin test.

Have Degenhardt and Luongo been wrestling at 145 and 152 respectively? HB you said when they get back to their normal weights. I thought they had been wrestling 152 and 160 all year.

Should have clarified. Degenhardt wrestled 145 last week so I assume he's certified there. Luongo has been at 160 all year.

103- McKim went up early, and held on to win it. This Milke kid is tough for Falls City. In the 3-4 place match Ferdig-PL beat Groff-AUB 1-0; very controversial call at the end, Groff appeared to have an escape. The only point was an illegal headscissors on Groff.
112- Negley is a man at 112. Laughlin was deep in on a shot, which excited the Burke fans, then Negley tossed him to his back and held him for the rest of the match, which excited the Christian fans. In the 3-4 place match Allan- PL defeated Henne-AUB 1-0, with an escape as the only point.
119- A little weaker without Butrick but Mertes simply dominated. He beat Penka bad ans nearly pinned him at least 3 times. This Mertes kid is tough I would love to see him and Butrick wrestle soon.
125-McKim was down early to Beitel and then pinned him. McKim also almost got D'Q for having what some officials thought was ringworm on his back.
130-Schmidt scored a takedown in the 1st, Parrish rode him out in the second, Schmidt rode Parrish out in the 3rd. Parrish did not look bad but still is not at full strength. Kenning-TC and Parrish match in the semis was cloase with Parrish getting an escape in the closing seconds.
135- Very controversial call in the semis. The ref called it illegal right away so when Kinhart could not continue, Bashus was given the loss. He then pinned a good Curzon in the consol finals. Very tough weight class, I would have loved to see Koch and Bashus in the finals.
140- Made a lot weaker without Randall-BUR and Kinsella-BRY, who did not make weight. Harpham and Stelling was an interesting match in the finals. Harpham dominated but Stelling is always dangerous. He threw Harpham but Harpham rerolled him and stuck him.
145- Cochrane is a solid wrestler and put up a great fight against Sprang.
152- Another tough weight class with Michel from BUR getting beat by DOrn in the semis. in the finals Dorn got in deep on a shot then got head and hipped to his back and stuck. DOrn looked pretty good in his fisrt tourney at 152
160-Toughest weight class of the tourney. Crouch versus Luongo in the finals was a classic that got tarnished by a horrible fan. From my view it was a takedown and a nice on in that. Jones-FC is a solid 160 and looked very good. He threw and pinned a returning Kansas state placer in the consol finals.
171-Alexander was definitely the class of this weight. Mack from BUR was a returning SQ but got 4th I think. Rotunda best Mack in an exciting match in teh semis.
189- Pursel is a man and we should all be glad he is a senior. Boy does this kid have some thighs on him, I bet he was one heck of a football player too. He made Craig look pretty bad in the finals, and teched Zech-AUB in teh semis.
215- Browne versus Coatney was 3-3 when Browne executed a firemans and pinned coatney. Exciting at first with a lot of action.
275- BOy Bergland and Hoffman are BIG KIDS. You can tell that Bergland has a little more experience and it showed. Hoffman charged in and Bergland Speared him, would have been nice to see that good of tackling technique from the Huskers this year.

I thought it was a good tournament with the real race going for second place, Burke is a solid team.

Negley won most outstanding wrestler and was desevering of it. Bergland of Plattsmouth is looking almost unstoppable. Rhoades of Plattsmouth hurt his arm and C. Bashus of Plattsmouth lost on a DQ, otherwise they finish 2nd to a very tough O. Burke. Auburn as I said after the Plattsmouth/Auburn dual is a very good team. They will be in the mix at districts and State. This team from Plattsmouth is still waiting to find their place and hopefully after a little rest, they will realize they can be a very good team. Only time will tell. The C. Bashus slam was a very questionable call. This ref got an ear full from the Plattsmouth coach and will not be so quick to make that call the next time I think.

The team race should be even more interesting with 5 teams makeing a good claim to being the district favorite at the halfway point of the season.
Auburn- has defeated Gretna and Plattsmouth in a dual, Plattsmouth in a tough tourney, and have 6 state qualifiers back.
Beatrice- may be the deepest team, beat Crete and Gretna in a tourney.
Crete- return 5 state qualifiers, beat Beatrice in a dual, beat Gretna in a tourney this weekend
Plattsmouth- finished well at Auburn invite despite being a little short handed, oung team that should finish well
Gretna- early season favorite, better tourney than dual team, may have the most district champions of the five.

Second half should shed some more light especially the Plattsmouth invite, Raymond Central invite, and the conclusion of dual season. Don't forget that Auburn and Crete dual on tuesday this week. Some say B-1 may be weaker that B-2, but it may have more depth, 4 rated teams, and definitely will have a better team race.

It was not a questionable call, it was BULL !!!!
Bashas had control all the way down, the Bryan kid was getting dominated by Bashas. The ref was Paul Lavigne if that tells you anything.
I heard the a Bryan person tell Mr Bashas later on that they should of had their kid continue for a few seconds and let his son go on into the finals, Bashas was definalety the beter wrestler. But Bashas also came back and pinned his way to 3rd place.
One note, Bashas handled the situation with total class.

I am interested to see what happens with 119 out of this district. Wiens, Mertes, Buttrick, Dubray, Penke. Penke lost a close match to Wiens at Platteview. Buttrick hammered Dubray but will he be healthy? Mertes and Dubray wrestle in a dual tomorrow night. Pretty good kid being left home.

i was at the auburn tourney and saw the call with Bashus. yeah we may not all agree with the ref's decision but his is the final one, and my hat does go off to Chad Bashus, he handled it with alot of good sportmanship.

I'm guessing someone at 119 will move up - 125 is possibly the weakest weight class in B-1, and with the exception of the Cozad and Gering kids, one of the weaker weights in the state.....
