Nick Smith (Schafer) is a quality wrestler and I myself have been impressed with his abilities in the past. But, Marcum did beat him when they wrestled. Marcum also beat Hudiburgh last year. The last time Nick and Hudiburgh wrestled was in the summer at Kearney and Hudiburgh beat him. And then, you throw Belville in there who also beat Nick the last time they wrestled. I do not think Marcum and Belville have wrestled or that Hudiburgh and Belville have wrestled. I know Nick has probably improved, but I am sure everyone else has to. The only way to settle this seems to be get all of them together on Sunday and have a round robin. I for one would be willing to pay the price of admission to see that. GOOD LUCK TO ALL - I look forward to watching you in OMAHA.

Did they meet up last year at Elkhorn, that was a tough 189 bracket.

Not sure who matched up with who at elkhorn. I know Wofford won at 189 and Hudiburgh wrestled Janovich (lost by 1) in the finals at 171. I don't think Nick made the finals though - I think I remember him losing a match in the semis.

All the guys on this list are great wrestlers. I also heard that Marcum beating Schafer was kind of a fluke. I did not see the match (wish i would have) but the bottom line is Marcum won. It seems to me that marcum is kind of the guy everyone loves to hate. For the last couple years everyone continues to "bash" on him and seems like there is always controversy around him but he continues to win. Marcum and Hudiburgh are in the same district, and I assume they will meet again at state. Will any of these guys meet up other than that? And who are a few of the "others" people are voting for? 189 appears to be a fairly deep and competitive weight.

The best 189 pounder of all time is a guy that plays for the Lions now!

Nick is never in it till the final whistle blows
If you watched him loose at the end after leading the whole match then you , I , and a lot of lockers know what I mean . He don't know (protect a lead) it's all go till it's over . Nick you are the man ! The state of Nebraska is won on your feet . James Berger |

I beg to differ wrasslin. Schelsinger was good (he beat me) but the best 189 pounder of all time was probably a guy by the name of Tim Cahill. He wrestled at one of the millard schools (i beleive millard south) in the mid 70's and at the time the weight was something like 185 instead of 189. But again, that is just an opinion.

Last years Elkhorn Invite's 189 lb. results: 1. Levi Wofford 2. Dana Schuett 3. Jake Smith (by coin flip) - Jake won the match earlier in the tournament 5-1. 4. James Belville 5. Nick Smith (by coin flip) - Krajicek won the match earlier in the tournament by pin. 6. Michael Krajicek |

Tim Cahill was a 3x champ at Millard High (167 in '74, 185 in 75-76). Schlesinger was back-to-back 189 champ 1989-90. "Energy Flows Where Attention Goes" -- James Arthur Ray |

I'd add in Ryan Coe of Kearney and Clinton Childs of Omaha North. Childs was simply amazing his senior year. He had to deal with Jason Branigan all through his career.

Clinton Childs was the best 189lbs. I have seen in NE. Jason Branigan was right there too as they went back and forth in their careers at 171-189. Both great wrestlers.

Schaefer has improved tremendously this year I'm sure and I would go as far to say that he has improved more than other people, mainly because he switched schools, which means better coaching. The kid has the ablility he just didn't know how to use it before, give him a break about losing to marcum and not protecting his lead, it's still early and he'll be just fine!
