In 1988 there were two wrestlers who won their 3rd state title-Jeremie Eckley of Sidney at 119 Class B and Don Reyes of Gering at 112 Class A. As good as both these two wrestlers were, they each had one loss on the season. Name me the wrestlers that beat them. I'm not even saying I know the answer-but I have a pretty good idea.

You might be partially right...although I'm sure pretty sure Eckley's loss was to someone else with Nebraska ties

Eckley's loss was to Tommy Deter from Gering

I'm positive it was not Deter. Eckley owned Deter-just look at the state championship match the year before. I'm pretty sure it was an out of state kid that beat Eckley.

Western Conference finals senior year, Deter beats Eckley. Believe Eckley won the other 4 or five times they met as seniors, but all were very close.

Okay my thinking is that it was John Buxton from Spearfish, SD, who later wrestled for the University of Nebraska. Buxton was a 1988 graduate and 1st team HS All American. He was also 119 that year. I remember vaguely that Spearfish used to come to one of the western Nebraska tournaments.

HB...Spearfish probably was at the Chadron invite...not sure, but strong possibility...I was away in the Navy at that time.

Deter was the state champ at 119 in class A in 1988, Eckley was champ the same year and same weight in class B. Reyes was the champ at 112 in class A that year.
I reffed those guys alot, don't ever remember Donnie Reyes and Jeremy Eckley matching up. I don't think they were ever in the same weight class. But Deter did beat Eckley their senior year.... |

Visited with Chuck Deter, he confirmed that Tommy beat Jeremy at the Mitchell invite. I reffed the next 2 times they met, Chadron Invite and a dual; Jeremy won, but all were extremely close.
Jeremy was always fun to ref, he was so unconvential, difficult to wrestle. (and ref) I remember when he was a freshman at the Western Conference. He wrestled Joe Mejia in the finals (Joe was a state champ by this time) and the score at the end of the first period was like 17-14. Joe eventually won, but Jeremy was making his mark. Tommy and Jeremy were class individuals on and off the mat. I always enjoyed doing their matches. |
