Viking Wrestling Club Crowns National Champion

Chicago, IL--Jacob Marquardt just won the University Greco-Roman National title yesterday in Chicago, IL. Jacob and Marshall Marquardt (Viking WC) out of Dana College in Blair, NE competed at the prestigous University National Championships at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL on Thursday April 14th. Marshall and Jacob both are Dana College wrestlers, but also compete for the Viking Wrestling Club which is a club that helps train Dana College wrestlers for National, International and World level competition.

The University National Championships are put on by USA Wrestling and FILA which are the two key governing bodies of National and International wrestling. The Universities are comprised of many of the nation's top college age wrestlers born from 1981-1987. Many of the top Division I and other college wrestlers travel to the windy city to compete for a national championship.

Both Jacob and Marshall competed in Greco-Roman. Marshall, who is the starting 174 pounder for Dana College, went 1-2 on the day competing at 84 kg (185 lbs), but competed very well, losing to the eventual runner-up, Aaron Boone from the United States Olympic Education Center 3-2, 2-0. Jacob Marquardt (120 kg, 264.5 lbs), had a very successful day by winning a national championship! Jacob went 3-0 on the day with three falls, which included a come back victory from a 3-0 deficit in the first period to pin unattached Dustin Fox at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in the gold-medal bout.

The University National Championships qualify wrestlers for the University World Team Trials to be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 22-29. Champions from this tournament will receive an automatic bid into a best-of-three championship series to determine this year’s University World Team representative at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, August 1-7. As of right now, the Viking Wrestling Club will be sending two representatives to Colorado Springs for the World Team Trials. Jacob Marquardt and Bryan Scambler will compete for their spot on the World Team. Scambler will be competing for the JR FILA World Team and Marquardt will be competing for the University World Team.
