What is the oldest continuous running invitational in Nebraska? When did it start?

There ain't many things older than Frank...

At his last birthday, they had the Gretna Fire Department on standby...

I can't give a clue because I don't know. I'd like to find out and I just may go watch it some year soon.

I did referee several years in the Eagle Grove Invitational, which is the oldest tournament in Iowa. I believe this year will be their 55th or 56th year. It's a classic. One year when I was there they announced the number of kids who had wrestled in that tournament who had gone on to be DI national champions. I can't remember the exact number but I think it was in the high 20's. That was in 1980 so there have been quite a few more since then.

I would think the North/Eckfelt Tournament must be one of the oldest.

That's true but they only brought one truck and it was the smallest one they have.

The real test of my age is that when I bend over to tie my shoes I look around to see if there is anything else I can do while I'm down thewre.

Frank that would be a fun thing to do go to the oldest tournament in NE. I may just hitch a ride with you!

Sounds good but first we have to find out which one it is. We have 2 nominations with a question mark but no starting date.

Did you ever wrestle in the Eagle Grove Invitational?

Never wrestled in it I am a old West Waterloo boy but you are right about the competition in the Eagle Grove Tourney.

O'Neill Inv. has been going on since at least December of 1964. Probably not the oldest tournament, but there is a date. Albion Invite started a school year later in January 1966.

Thanks, dbonge. This is like one of those silent auctions where you write your bid and then check back later to see if someone has topped it. As of now the O'Neill Invitational is the oldest tournament in Nebraska. Any bidders with an earlier date?

Hey, I wouldn't say Frank's up there in years...and with all due respect, Frank...but God called the other day and he wants his white robe back that YOU said you were going to pick up from the cleaners. Bwahaha

That being said...I thought maybe the Omaha South meet was older than the Ekfelt. I would think that it would have to be one of those two tournaments, since wrestling has been around the Omaha schools longer than anywhere else.

Do you know, or can you find out, when it began? Right now our leader in the clubhouse is O'Neill Invitational with December, 1964. Keep those bids rolling in.

I think that's supposed to be a West Waterloo lad, not boy.
