Every year I see this hue and cry for seeding at state. Show us how easy it is so the 2 best kids don't meet on Friday night. If you want to seed the entire tournament more power to you. But if you are going to enter you must seed at least the first or last 7 matches in a class. ie, Class A 103 through 140, Class D 145 through 285, etc. Give us the complete bracket in the format shown on the NSAA website. Put your #1 seed on line 1, #2 on line 16, #3 on line 9, and #4 on line 8. If you want to seed 8 then #5 on line 5, #6 on line 12, #7 on line 13, and #8 on line 4. When you are done seeding draw the rest. Post the complete 16 line bracket. It will be tough to do, and in some cases it won't be possible, but we will try to compare scores, find they met some place else in the tournament, etc. I'm calling for at least 7 matches to avoid cherry picking. There are a few brackets where there are several kids who stand far above the rest of the qualifiers and are pretty much "upset proof". You could hit on those and say, "See, I told you so." Let's see what you can do on those brackets that don't have a lot of "upset proof" wrestlers.

The thing is, people see two undefeated wrestlers or 1 loss wrestlers on the same side and they don't like it at that weight, but at others they are thankful they drew away from the "studs". It's an imperfect system but seeding it would not be easy and still would not please everyone. Just my two cents!

Why not just use the same criteria you use for seeding districts except only seed the 4 district champions?

If the seeding comittee cant do any better than we do as coaches at the district meets, it wouldn't be a big improvement. Ross, I assume you've sat in on a few, so know what I'm talking about. We can't even all agree on what the criteria are, much less follow them.

The four brackets used for state are fine and do a great job allowing for district finalists to be state finalists a week later if they are truly the best two kids in the state. I just don't know that it should be a random draw, which one of the four brackets is used. If there are two kids that are 42-0 on the season they shouldn't randomly be placed on the same side. Use a panel of 5 people to decide which one of the four brackets should be used for each weight class, showing only the records of the four district champions and then have them pick one of the two brackets that pits the two best records on opposite sides. Its just an idea.......... in class C I'll try it..........

I changed three or four without thinking about how good anyone was, just looking at district champion's records. Did it make it better? Who knows............

In the D-3 district in Elm Creek the coaches, who have head to head, common opponent, and know these wrestlers better than anyone in the state, only had 27 out of 56 seeds correct. I'm not say the coaches did a poor job!!!! I'm pointing out how would anyone without head to head of common opponent in many cases and no way could they know every wrestler, be able to seed the state meet better? This is your motivation as a wrestler to work so hard that no matter where you end up on the state bracket you will win!!! Stop making excuses!!! WORK TO WIN!!!!

As far as the coaches knowing kids better, etc. etc., it doesn't always matter. Some teams wrestle tougher schedules than others and so if you have wrestlers that end up in some sort of a round robin with common opponents and head to head, it goes to the criteria that state has set. In that criteria, you get a point for being a state qualifier or medalist last year. Sorry, but I've never thought that should be used. We don't use it at any other tourney late in the year. So even though coaches may know these kids and really have an idea of who is better, many times it's left up to the state criteria to decide.

It is supposed to go to criteria. It didn't in A-3, thus my comment that as coaches we can't even agree what the criteria is.

A beat B
B has 2 wins over a common with C but didn't meet head to head
C beat A

B is a returning placer
A and C were qualifiers,but not placers

A 38-5 88%
B 25-4 86%
C 23-5 82%

How do you seed it?

189 should stay how is. Kastl and Huffman will meet in finals. They are the two best in the state.

I think that 135 should be switched. Caleb Hoyt and Noland Broekemier are top two in the state.

Maybe they are.......maybe not, be nice to have had that same argument for the last 25 years!!! System is not always fair......remember when Dethlefs and Eckley had to meet in the Semi's??? Best match i ever witnessed and a pure injustice to both as Dethlefs had to settle for 3rd.

What if the two best kids in the state are in the same district??? Then I guess they may or may not be on the same side of the bracket and just because they live near each other and have lets say went 3-3 over the season they get penalized for beating each other and they can smoke the other guys from around the state........the guy that is 37-0 may not truly be better........could go on and on!!! I guess it is what it is and you have to do everything you can to beat whomever steps on the mat with you!
