State Qualifier Registered: March 21, 2005 Posts: 1035 | I don't know the answers to all of these but thought it would be fun to see how many state we can name that have produced a DI national champ. (He went to high school in that state.) I've left out the obvious ones, like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma, etc. I know a few of these but won't answer until it looks like it has just about run it's course. Give your answers like this: Utah-Cael Sanderson, Iowa State. Who can you think of from these states/countries? Washington Oregon Idaho Nevada New Mexico Texas Colorado Wyoming Norh Dakota Louisiana Mississippi Arkansas Alabama South Carolina Tennesse Kentucky West Virginia Maryland Delaware Rhode Island District of Columbia Connecticut Massachusetts New Hampshire Maine Alaska Hawaii Georgia Montana Missouri Indiana Japan If you can't think of anyone from the obvious states just post and I'm sure you will have a ton odfanswers in a short period of time. |

You may have thought that Chris Bono was your teammate when you were in the pen. But that wasn't Chris. He wrestled for Iowa State. Larry Owings wrestled for Washington but was from Canby, Oregon. I suggest you buy a season ticket to the school cafeteria. |

How could you forget the twins from South Dakota that were champs at UNL? |

UNO fans may remember another Oregon State national champ who was an assistant coach at UNO mid to late 70's. He will be taking his team to the DI nationals later this week. Hint: His team and Wyoming are the only teams I can think of that wear brown uniforms. OOPS. I just thought of another one. Brown University wears brown and red uniforms. This message has been edited. The year after TJ Williams won his high school teammate from Chicago, (I think Mt. Carmel HS, but I'm not sure) Tony Davis won for Northern Iowa. |
Rookie Registered: February 16, 2006 Posts: 54 | If you're going to put down 2x Naitonal Champ TJ Williams, don't forget to list older brother and 3x National Champion Joe. |
Novice Registered: December 13, 2005 Posts: 230 | Canada - Earl McCready, Oklahoma State 3X Champ 1928-1929-1930 (And before someone mentions it, no, I am getting old, but I never saw him wrestle.) |
Novice Registered: December 13, 2005 Posts: 230 | I might be wrong, but I think there was only one national champ from Texas. Texas - Bob Johnson, Oklahoma State Correct me if I'm wrong, but if true, I find that an interesting bit of trivia. |

Moose, how were the D2 Nationals? |
Novice Registered: December 13, 2005 Posts: 230 | They were all I expected and more with some great matches from start to finish. Wish some of my favorites had done a little better, but that's sports. There were a lot of freshman, sophomore and junior wrestlers competing, so DII should be exciting again next year. |

There is at least one more. He was a national champ at a college in the East that we don't ordinarily think of as a wrestling power (unless you are Farmer Burns). He was an Olympic gold medalist Melbourne, Australia in 2000. |
Novice Registered: December 13, 2005 Posts: 230 | If your thinking of Brandon Slay, the Amarillo, Texas native who won a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics, he never won the gold in college. Wrestling for the University of Pennsylvania, he was a 2X runner-up in 1997 & 1998 at 165#, which isn't a bad college career. |

You are right. The mind goes first, then the legs. Have you noticed how much I've been limping? The Texan that could have this year finished his season last weekend in Kearney. |
