I hope to get the survey and get it turned in, but I did send this letter to the NSAA anyway. I think it might be a good idea for others to write also. Dear Mr. Colgate, I am writing in reference to the new rule, which was put in place this year, which stipulated that no matches which were wrestled against Junior Varsity competition could be counted on your varsity record for districts. Mr. Colgate I am writing to let you know that I am strongly opposed to this rule and hope that it can be eliminated for next year. I believe that if this rule continues it may hurt both large schools and small schools which field wrestling teams. Many Class C and D teams invite Class A JV teams to their wrestling tournaments. This seems to be a great fit for both the small schools and the large schools. The small schools often have a difficult time finding enough teams to fill their tournaments. Being able to invite Class A JV teams in their area allows them to fill out their tournaments. Also because the Class A JV teams often have a more full roster than the Class C and D teams, it also helps fill out the brackets at the tournaments and makes for fewer byes. My concern is that if the lower class schools are not allowed to count their matches against JV teams in their varsity records they will stop inviting the larger schools to their invites. This will hurt the large schools because they will no longer have a chance to get the excellent competition for their JV wrestlers that they are able to get at these lower class varsity meets. This will hurt the smaller schools because they will now have a more difficult time filling their meets and their brackets (this is if they choose not to invite the larger school JV teams). Mr. Colgate it is my understanding that the rational for the new rule was to prevent larger schools from dropping their varsity wrestlers to the JV level to get them varsity matches against lower class schools to inflate their records. It is my contention that the previous rules already accounted for this and prevented it. It is my understanding that the rules already state that a wrestler can only count matches wrestled for his varsity squad on his varsity record. If this is the case, as I believe it is, then if a wrestler drops to JV and wrestles against smaller class school varsity competition it should still not count on his varsity record, if he returns to varsity. Now it is true a coach might cheat on the record but they could cheat on the new rule as easy as they could cheat on the old rule. There are only two exceptions where I could see a coach taking advantage of the old rule to inflate records for members of his team. One a coach could take his varsity team and enter them into a predominantly JV meet. I just don’t think this hardly ever happens. The other way a coach could abuse the rule would be to invite primarily JV teams to his own tournament to lower the level of competition. Again I just don’t think this hardly ever happens. When the lower class schools invite larger class school JV teams to their tournaments I believe it is for the reasons I have already stated. The large school JV teams allow them to fill out their tournament and even fill out their brackets. I urge you to reconsider this new rule, as I believe it hurts both large and small school wrestling programs. |
