SkyHawks to hit '08 in top form BY TONY BOONE WORLD-HERALD CORRESPONDENT With duals scheduled with three highly ranked opponents looming in early January, the wrestlers at Omaha Skutt are getting a much-deserved pause from competition. The 10-time Class B champions have opened the 2007-08 season in dominating fashion. The SkyHawks followed up victories in the Ekfelt Invitational at Omaha North and the Boys Town Invitational by claiming the team title at last weekend's 24-team Midwest Wrestling Classic in Kansas City, Mo. "I think they need a little break," Skutt coach Brad Hildebrandt said. "We've wrestled three really tough tournaments, and all three have been multiple-day tournaments, three weekends in a row. I think they're kind of looking for a break and recharging for the rest of the year." The SkyHawks are riding a high entering the second part of the season. Their championship in Kansas City was one of their most impressive regular-season showings in recent years. Skutt scored 602 team points in the event, outdistancing last year's winner, Ponca City, Okla., by 88 points. The SkyHawks had the most pins in the tournament and placed 10 wrestlers in the top eight in their weight classes, led by Zach Cottle's individual title at 103 pounds and runner-up finishes by Jake Cardenas (152 pounds) and Derek Vogel (160). Omaha Creighton Prep also competed in the classic, finishing ninth in the team race. Patrick Rollins placed third at 112 pounds, and Zach Nelson (103) and Rowan Stander (160) each finished fourth for Prep. |
