Hopefully he did it on a day when the market finished in the positive. I'd hate to see the market crash and have CNN blame it on Brad.

Wont see Brad on FOX but I bet you would be more like to see this video. Good old boy from Texas making some sense out where the Democratic controlled House and Senate are leading us and just think if the Obamanator (most liberal voting record) gets the White House!
Funny stuff that every one should pay attention to and just how out of control Government as a whole has gotten!

Yeah Hawk im sure that the light bulb bill was voted strictly down party lines and no republicans wanted to vote for it.....Those light bulbs save energy and money over the long haul. Heaven forbid we do that!

Red Sox,
Obviously you are not aware of the connection between SilverHawk and I (hint might be hawk and silverhawk), my son wrestled for him and we are fairly close. I give him crap every time I can, especially when he throws in on something political.
But as far as the light bulb thing (I take it you watched it since you mentioned them). No doubt they save energy. Now do they save money? That has yet to be proven, since you watched the video let me ask you this. When your bulb burns out are you going to take them to a disposal site, if one breaks in your house are you going to do what the EPA mandates? When do we stop throwing dollars at dimes? Common sense is thrown out the window on way to many cases just so we can get some pork added to a decent bill! As I said GOVERNMENT AS A WHOLE HAS GOTEN OUT OF CONTROL!
I could go on but this thread was meant to shine a positive light on one of Nebraska's finest atheletes and not a politcial discussion, so lets leave it at that!

I prefer credible news outlets like MSNBC and CBS-I mean how can you go wrong with such a patriot like Keith Olbermann or a fine upstanding Daily Kos member like Dan Rather?

Make sure you don't break one of those curly bulbs, you might get mercury poisoning, or have to pay $1000.00 and have the hazmat team come and detox you and your house or business and dispose of that great invention. Sounds like a real good idea, not! I will be stocking up on the good old energy draining non-hazardous bulbs.

Hawk,
You are over reacting. You must remember 2 things.

1. Most of us uneducated rubes aren't smart enough to know which light bulbs to use so we need guidance from Big Brother.
2. Granted, socialism has never worked in any country in the world, but that's just because the people running it in those other countries aren't as smart as our aspiring leaders.

There is one problem that I see looming on the horizon. After we have completed the redistribution of wealth so everyone in the country has exactly the same amount then the next logical step is to require that every wrestling match end in a tie. I assume that in dual meets we will revert to the old scoring of awarding 2 points to each team for a draw, but how will we handle tournaments? To give 16 gold medals in each weight class is going to strain the budget of many tournaments. By the time some enterprising company figures out how to print the brackets for tournaments with no winners or losers, then gets it approved by OSHA, EPA, and a variety of other alphabet organizations we might not know who won the 2010 state tournament until 2050.

By that time the earth will either be melted from global warming or be covered with a layer of ice, depending on which camp of Chicken Littles you favor. So I guess it won't be too important for us to know who the 2010 state tournament.

When I heard about the light bulb thing a few months ago, I wondered how it is the governments business to tell us what we have to buy.
Hell, if we are going there, giving a monopoly, at least give it to a company in the US.
You can buy only american grown tobacco for cigs. Of course, if we are going to legislate energy use, lets legislate health and insurance premium relief and outlaw cigs.
Alcohol can only be bought from US makers, so Uncle Jack D. ought to git rich quik.
Then, groceries can only be bought from the family farm.
ETC.

But on the other hand, I wonder how the 'monopolies' of today compare to those of the turn of the last century. I don't remember all of that and how it worked...but is WalMart the next Standard Oil? Help me out Red Sox.

You know what's funny? Way back in 1989, when I was but a young scribe just beginning to make my way through the journalism industry, I wrote a column about my disgust for politics in general, and for those allegedly representing our once-great nation in particular.

Around that time, the metal band Queensryche had released its concept album "Operation: Mindcrime," and there was a line in the title cut to that album that I quoted. It went something like:

"The time is ripe for changes, there's a growing feeling that taking a chance on a new kind of vision is due..."

And though I didn't quote the next part of the song, the lyric goes:

"I used to tell the media to tell me the truth (tell us the truth). But now I see the payoffs everywhere I look. Who do you trust when everyone's a crook?"

When I wrote that column 20 years ago, I remember hearing from a few die-hard members of both political perversions (liberal and conservative) who thought I was an idiot for writing that column. Now, two decades later...it seems that column was spot on.

Right now, I wouldn't vote Obama for assistant dog catcher and I'm not so sure I'd vote McCain for the position either. In fact, I'm very close to making EXCLUSIVE use of the write-in option when I go to the ballot box this November.

The people running our country right now are incapable of thinking in the real world, and I'm not so sure we're not overdue for some type of a major revolution. At what point are we, as a free-thinking people, going to say that we've had enough of these worthless a-holes ruining our once-proud nation?

Not gonna go into bashing political parties or into an arguement with you Hawk. I've been there too many times with people on this board. When one political party is in charge, the other finds a reason to complain. Its as simple as that. Light bulbs one day, immigration the next. Nobody can do right. That's how our world works today. I have those very light bulbs in my house in every fixture, and they work great and we have seen a small dent in our electrical bill. I have not had to throw any away yet, and its been two years. When I do, I'm sure that I can find someone to take them just like I do with all of my recyclables. If I have to put them in a small box in my garage until I do so, then that's fine. I do what I can to help out the environment, simple as that. Does it sound pretty trivial to argue about light bulbs? Yes. But you brought it up and the representative felt the need to waste our time by ranting on about light bulbs also. Seems to me his rant wasted time and money also when he could have been doing important things like trying to solve the immigration problem and gas prices, but hey we all have our place in society. These light bulbs will be made in the U.S. in the near future. If we want to get into "US made products", then all of us should get rid of our foreign made products and live in tents then. If they could be made cheaper in the U.S., they would be made here, along with so many other products. I'm sure there are some good old fashioned light bulbs made in other parts of the world, but we don't talk about that. As far as monopolies go, is this technically not a monopoly. Do other companies have a chance to make these light bulbs? Absolutely. Monopolies are an interesting thing. One one hand, no one likes them because they "take the little guy out" but on the other hand they usually distribute a product that is equal or better than the "little guy" at a very competitive price. Seems to me like a lot of us utilize these so called monopolies on a regular basis like Microsoft and Wal-Mart. Oh well. I'm sure I'll get debated and made fun of for my post but oh well. Hawk if you don't want your posts to be misinterpreted maybe you should post a warning like one of the moderators has. That was a joke. None of this happened until someone bashed CNN for no reason. Surprise, surprise no one can talk politics on here without slams or insults. Go Brad Vering and Team USA in 2008!

Another thing too before my seven year old yells at me for getting her to softball practice late. Alot of people complain about government. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Run for an office, however small it may be. Vote in every election that you can. Go to city council meetings and voice your opinion. Write to senators. Meet with representatives. Too many people sit around and complain about everything they can. I know that a great deal of the people that run the various government positions have invested a lot of time and energy into trying to help our country, not tear it down from the inside. Plus, they could do it better than me because they have taken the time to become educated about our government and its inner workings. That's why I stick to what I know, which is teaching history and government and claiming that I know about sports. We have the best country and government in the world, with the best people running it. We lose sight of that way too often. I don't care who wins the next election, both men will do just fine but with little twists in how they do things. I want the people that complain about government on a regular basis to ask themselves if they have actually done enough to become educated about how our systems work on the federal, state, and local levels before they throw out comments about how government is corrupt and this and that. If you can do better, throw your collective hats in the ring for a political office and debate these people on various topics that affect the people of the great states in the U.S. I think all of us would take a step back and collect ourselves if we had to be a political representative for a short period of time in my opinion. Now I have said my peace, but I'm sure I will be gullable enough to be goaded into more conversation about this topic. Did I mention that it was cool that Brad Vering made the olympic team again?
