He is one of three guys, Hintz and Rieder the others, who are all very equal and any of which could be called upon to start. With a long body frame, Smith is natural at the 174 weight class, but could also go down to 165 if needed. He continues to improve with experience. 2008-09: Smith transfered to UW as a redshirt freshman from Chadron State College in Nebraska and wrestled for the Cowboys at 157 and 174 pounds. He quickly worked his way into contention for mat time and posted a 19-7 overall record. Smith had three wins by major decision, two pins and one technical fall. He started the Stanford dual for Wyoming at 157 pounds and picked up a key win by fall in the team dual win. 2007-08: Smith was a member of the Chadron State College wrestling team and used his redshirt season. High School: Smith attended Gering High School and was a three-time Nebraska state champion. He was named Outstanding Wrestler at the state tournament twice, the Outstanding Senior Wrestler for Nebraska and honored as the Region Wrestler of the Year three times. Smith set multiple records, among them was the state all-class take-down mark, as well as the single season take-down record of 320. He was a four-year letterwinner. Personal: Brock was born in Scottsbluff, Neb. on July, 12, 1988. He is one of three children of Randy and Janna Smith. Both his brother Brandon and cousin, Jarred Berger, wrestled in college. Brock is a social sciences major at UW." |
Junior High Registered: October 06, 2003 Posts: 510 | It appears Brock is making an impact at Wyoming (19-7 last year) and I salute him. I always thought Brock did not take a back seat to anyone from Nebraska in his class. I think he is proving that at the college level. Go Brock! (Start of Rant): I remember last year, someone posting how Brock Smith was basically like someone coming in off the streets to Mark Branch. And yet, they understand in their media guide that he was a 3 time state champion in Nebraska and Nebraska record holder in take-downs, and outstanding wrestler at the state tournament. Brock also frequented Fargo and competed well at the national level. I think he also excelled at the Disney Duals, if memory serves. But somehow, we were to believe he supposedly came to Wyoming undecorated and no big deal compared to who Mark Branch normally sees. What a load of BS that was. (End of Rant) |

Make no mistake, Brock is a good wrestler but I think his bio is a little inflated. Since when is there an Outstanding Wrestler named at the State Tournament? And twice? |
Junior High Registered: October 06, 2003 Posts: 510 | If you take a look at even that little snippet you reposted -- the quote was from Mark Branch. My statement was my take on what his "raw talent" comment meant. To me, that sounded like he saw him playing basketball down the street and saw that he might be a good wrestler with his coaching. This is what I took offense to. Not sure how his resume is inflated, he is a 3 time state champion from Nebraska, and holder of state takedown records. |

Junior High Registered: October 06, 2003 Posts: 510 | I don't know, I think I just kind of identify Brock as someone that my son Dan could have been like, had he been more discplined with his wrestling (and had better coaching, maybe if Blair had stayed at Gross ...). I have always admired how Brock wrestles, and I always thought he didn't get a lot of credit compared to his accomplishments. So I just see Brock as being what Dan might have been. That's all. Dan is joining the Marines, and I think he will be a good Marine. He is about 145 these days, so would have been a lighter weight college wrestler than Brock. He does well in competitions with the Marine recruits, wins the mile and a half races at just under 9 minutes, and does 15 pullups which places well -- but not at the top, of the recruits. |
