There was a sportswriter at the Omaha World-Herald who first coined Fairbury as the Jeffs, a shorter version of the name of their home county. I recall from may days at the Fairbury Journal-News seeing a framed copy of an old newspaper clipping that talked about how the Jeffs got their name.

I want to say that was hung in the hallway of the school located at the old Southeast Community College campus, but it may now be located in the trophy case at FHS. PhatJo might be able to hunt it down somewhere and pass on the highlights of the article.

I don't remember if the "Jeff" character from the old Mutt & Jeff comic strip was noted in the article or not. It was really an interesting read...just wish I could better remember the details.

I must be getting old...(expletive).

RR--Pretty funny! I resemble those guys, but unfortunately, they are better looking than I (and I haven't seen Frank, so I can't comment on him)! LOL

Abe Lincoln supposedly told the story about being stopped in the street by a man who pulled a gun. When Abe asked what he was doing the man said, I swore that if I ever saw a man uglier than me I'd shoot him". Abe answered, "If I'm uglier than you please pull the trigger".

Funny and sad. Funny in that Abe could laugh at himself. Sad in that he could never be elected today because the media would not think he looked good enough on TV and gave honest answers instead of what they wanted to report.

Munster, you win this beauty contest. I'm the guy that pulled the gun on Abe Lincoln.

i lived in maryville for 12 years and yes they are the spoofhounds. there are several different stories how this came about, much like ord, but the one that seemed to get repeated the most was the carnival toy version. some say it was due to the fact they had no mascot for a while and a rival school ( the savannah savages) hung it on them.

Estherville, IA is also the Midgets. They were in the same conference with the Sibley Generals, and the Sheldon (hometown of the Brands twins, Tom and Terry)Orabs. I thought an Orab was someone from the Middle East who was a poor speller. Then I learned it is a takeoff on their colors, ORAnge & Black. Other unusual ones from Iowa were the Everly Cattlefeeders and the Union-Whitten Cobras.

I like hearing interesting nicknames. One of the funniest that I have heard was in Hemingford Nebraska. My brother taught there for 4 years, and they used to be called the Hemingford Spudpickers. I think thats a great name.

My wife attended a high school whose nickname and mascot was the 'Bomb'. Not unusual except her high school was Hanford, Washington where they made the the first atomic bomb. A few years ago there was a movement to change the mascot (a person in a costume who looked like a bomb)but they didn't.

Georgia Satellites -- they had some good stuff, got overshadowed in the middle that 80's hair era.

Love singing "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" on karaoke night...

"I got a little change in mah pocket goin' jing-a-ling-a-lang..."

Good times, boys and girls...now if I could just remember them.
